How to make AI video look cinematic
The gap between "looks AI" and "looks cinematic" comes down to four levers: lens, light, camera and color grade. This recipe covers each with concrete vocabulary.
What this recipe solves
Your videos come out with too much shine, plastic skin, locked-off shots, oversaturated color. Everything screams "AI made this." The four levers below flip that.
The 4 levers
Focal length defines feeling
- 35mm — documentary feel, close, "I'm here"
- 50mm — human vision, neutral, quiet drama
- 85mm — compresses background, glamour portrait, romance
- Anamorphic 2.39:1 — cinema ratio, horizontal flares, blockbuster
In prompt: "shot on 50mm anamorphic lens, shallow depth of field, soft bokeh on background."
The biggest lever — and the most ignored
Veo, Runway and Kling default to neutral lighting (frontal, soft, balanced) — that's where the plastic look comes from. You have to dictate the light.
- Golden hour — low warm light, long shadows
- Three-point — key, fill and backlight (classic cinema)
- Rembrandt — triangular cheek shadow, dramatic
- Hard light — direct sun, sharp shadows, "Mad Max"
- Practical lighting — lights visible in the scene (lamps, neon)
In prompt: "Rembrandt lighting from camera-left, warm key, cool blue fill from window, dramatic falloff."
Movement with intention
Locked-off screams amateur. Random movement screams AI. Movement with intention screams cinema.
- Dolly in — closes in, intensifies
- Dolly out — reveals context, empties
- Crane down — starts up, descends — opens the scene
- Tracking — follows the subject sideways
- Handheld — soft shake, documentary feel
- Whip pan — fast cut to hide transitions
In prompt: "slow dolly-in, 24fps, subtle handheld shake, no zoom."
The palette tells the era
- Teal & Orange — modern blockbuster (orange skin, blue shadows)
- Desaturated — serious drama, indie
- Bleach bypass — dense blacks, high contrast, "Saving Private Ryan"
- Film LUT (Kodak 2383) — 35mm feel
- Neon (Cyberpunk) — magenta + cyan, futuristic
In prompt: "color graded with Kodak 2383 LUT, slight halation in highlights, lifted blacks."
Anti-plastic lock (always paste)
Example: same scene, refined
After: "35-year-old woman seated at the window of a Paris café at dawn, holding a cup with visible steam. 50mm lens, shallow depth of field, soft bokeh of street lights behind. Slow dolly-in over 5s. Practical light: morning sun through window as warm key from camera-right, blue fill from interior shadow, slight halation in highlights. Common mistakes
- Asking for "cinematic" and nothing else. Vague = generic.
- Cranking everything to 100%. Cinema is subtraction. Pick 1 dominant lever per shot.
- High saturation. Cinema is usually less saturated, not more.
- Forgetting sound. Even without audio, the grade affects how sound is perceived.
- Skipping post-grade. The prompt grade is a hint — refine in DaVinci or CapCut after.
